During the day the wood expands. At night the outdoor temperature lowers and the wood contracts. Creaking wheezing or popping sounds happen at nighttime due to cooler weather. Or when it has come loose.

It can ofter sound as if the roof is broken in some way or the roof is going to collapse. The sun shines on your roof all day warming the tiles and sub roof. The wood frame under your roof experiences temperature changes from the outdoor air because the attic does not receive much heating or air conditioning. This movement creates the popping noise.

The most common noise issues with flat roofs are banging loud rain snapping popping sounds heat related cracking and creaking. At night attic can sometime make loud creaking and cracking sounds. Banging sounds generally occur when a part of the roof has not been properly fixed in place. Popping cracking and snapping sounds coming from their roofs especially when the colder weather hits is a common problem.

The patter or even the roar of falling rain or hail popping and cracking noises perhaps due to thermal expansion and contraction of roof coverings metal roofing or roof structure and transmitted noises from other external sources such as low flying aircraft or nearby trains or auto truck traffic from a nearby highway. The creaking sound is perfectly normal and is caused by the movement of roof timbers responding to changes in temperature. Roof noises may be described as those attributed to an obvious source.
